The power of swearing: What we know and what we don’t

چکیده

Swearing produces effects that are not observed with other forms of language use. Thus, swearing is powerful. It generates a range distinctive outcomes: physiological, cognitive, emotional, pain-relieving, interactional and rhetorical. However, we know the power intrinsic to words themselves. Hence, our starting question is: How does get its power? In this Overview Paper, aim threefold. (1) We present an interdisciplinary analysis (‘what know’), drawing on insights from cognitive studies, pragmatics, communication, neuropsychology, biophysiology. identify specific swearing, including, inter alia: emotional force arousal; increased attention memory; heightened autonomic activity, such as heart rate skin conductance; hypoalgesia (pain relief); strength stamina; interpersonal, relational rhetorical outcomes. (2) explore existing (possible) explanations for in particular, hypothesis aversive classical conditioning takes place via childhood punishments swearing. (3) series questions issues remain unanswered by current research/theorising don’t including lack direct empirical evidence conditioning; offer directions future research.
